California Shooter, Who Killed 10 After Chinese New Year Party, Identified
- An Asian male opened fire at a dance venue in Monterey Park, as the local community were celebrating Lunar New Year, police said.
- Police have released photographs and a description of the “homicide suspect”. LA County Sheriff’s department said that the suspect is an “Asian male adult” wearing a black leather jacket, beanie and glasses, adding that he should be considered “armed and dangerous”.
- Police were involved in a stand-off with the man they believe was responsible for killing 10 people in a mass shooting, news agency AFP said quoting media reports.
- Witnesses said the man shot indiscriminately with a semiautomatic weapon. Police cautioned that the description of the shooter remains preliminary, and he gave no further identifying details.
- Captain Andrew Meyers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said officers had responded to emergency calls around 10:20pm on Saturday and found people pouring out of the premises.
- Footage posted on social media showed injured people on stretchers being taken to ambulances by emergency staff.
- US President Joe Biden tweeted that he and his wife Jill were “praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park,” adding, “I’m monitoring this situation closely.”
- Tens of thousands of people had gathered earlier in the day for the two-day Lunar New Year festival, which is one of the largest in southern California. The second day of the festival, Sunday, was canceled after the attack.
- The shooting was the deadliest in the US since a shooter in Uvalde, Texas killed 22 people at an elementary school last May 24.
- Gun violence is a huge problem in the United States, which saw 647 mass shootings last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive website, defined as an incident with four or more people shot or killed, not including the shooter.
